A Winter Wedding Tale | Michigan Wedding Photography

Winter,
A Lingering Season
Is a time to Gather Golden Moments,
Embark on a Sentimental Journey,
and
Enjoy every Idle Hour.
~John Boswell

As a wedding photographer I spend a unmentionable amount of hours worrying about the weather. Silly, I know. I'm not a meteorologist - and it seems even they have a hard time predicting the (Michigan?) weather. So when Michael & Ani shared their Winter Wedding plans I was -  well, nervous. The plans included Grand Rapids (a 2 hour drive for me), photos outdoors (hopefully), a drive from the church in Grand Rapids all the way to Muskegon (another lake effect snow town and 45 minutes away).

But besides the unpredictability and worry of a winter wedding - so many other things are just STELLAR.

Here's what  Love about a winter wedding:

*If you marry in a church, it's already decorated (and usually amazingly so!)

*Snow (and the consequential snuggling with your Love) is beautiful and romantic!

*Winter has a way of shedding a warm glow (indoors) on what matters most, the People.

*A Warm Wrap over a wedding dress - *Swoon!*

*Winter wedding photos are so much more unique than most weddings that occur in warm months - light settings push the envelope, a warm snuggle by the fire or a warm embrace on a chilly street lined with twinkle lights - all these Pure Magic!

We had the added fun of welcoming Ani's family from Nicaragua (and gave me many flashbacks of my own wedding with it's Mexican-American combining of cultures!), it was a warm and joyous event full of life and laughter. I think you'll see that here. After the exquisite wedding at the Cathedral of St Andrew in Grand Rapids we followed the bridal party to the Tundra Grand Haven where the Bravest.Bride.Award goes to Ani - we were met with 50 MPH winds and 32 degrees on the shores of Grand Haven and were able to capture 5 minutes of portraits before heading into the quaint downtown of Grand Haven, sparkling with Christmas Lights, the perfect setting for a few more portraits of the bride and groom. Well worth the cold!

Please enjoy this beautiful wedding and hope you are all staying warm.

Love, Melanie

Couple of Other Things to Consider when Getting Married in the Winter:

*The biggest thing to consider is DAYLIGHT (or lack there of!) If you're not planning on seeing your fiance before the ceremony I highly recommend an early ceremony so you have time post-ceremony for at least 30 minutes of outdoor natural light. Often winter wedding couples will opt to take pictures before a beautiful 5 or 6 PM evening ceremony, that works well too!

*This might be stating the obvious but preparations to keep warm: Think wraps for the girls and allowing extra time to get portraits as we often step in somewhere to get warm before venturing back outside. Some couples also prefer to do most portraits inside, if the venues allow.
